John Edwards is a decent man who has had his campaign tarnished by two anti-Catholic vulgar trash-talking bigots, Donohue said, He has no choice but to fire them immediately. As evidence, Donohue found a post by Marcotte on the Pandagon blogsite from December 26th, 2006, in which she claims that the Catholic stance on life issues is a plan to gain more money. The Catholic church is not about to let something like compassion for girls get in the way of using the state as an instrument to force women to bear more tithing Catholics, Marcotte writes.

GCSAA National Championship and Golf Classic set for Florida

2007 GCSAA National Championship & Golf Classic presented in partnership with The Toro Co.They don't call Palm Springs the "golf capital of the world" for nothing, and the upcoming Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA) National Championship and Golf Classic is just one more event to come to Southern California. .

Don't think Stanley Cup-champion Carolina and GM Jim Rutherford ...

OTTAWA -- The Carolina Hurricanes met with President George W. Bush at the White House on Friday and accepted congratulations for winning the Stanley Cup last June. Ideally, they'd like to make a return trip to Washington next winter. As the race for the post-season heats up, the Hurricanes have been largely overlooked by almost all the NHL experts as potential repeat champions, but don't think for a second GM Jim Rutherford isn't gearing up for another run. He doesn't get nearly enough credit for the work he's done with Carolina and don't be surprised if he makes another big move at -- or before -- the Feb. 27 trade deadline to try and put the Hurricanes over the top. Last year, Rutherford brought in veteran centre Doug Weight from St. Louis and Pittsburgh winger Mark Recchi during the final few months to give the Hurricanes the push they needed.

Aberdeen: Disc golf tournament Saturday

The 11th annual disc golf competition, the Frozen Tundra Challenge, is Saturday at the Richmond Lake Recreation Area, 10 miles northwest of Aberdeen. Hey, guys, don't make another mistake. The league is closer to making a change than you might think. It already tried larger goals at a research-and-development camp prior to the start of last season, as well as in a rookie tournament that included players from Toronto, Florida and Montreal. The difference from the current 6-foot wide by 4-foot high nets is an increase from 6-8 inches higher and wider, with the possibility of angled posts so shots that strike iron would have a better chance of caroming into the net instead of bouncing out.

Lysacek nails quad in US championship; world spotlight awaits

SPOKANE, Wash. - Even during the years when he fell short of his goals, Evan Lysacek was a dutiful student, observing the world's top men's figure skaters while working on his chance to break into the spotlight. "You can't be a leader in the sport by skating hesitant," Lysacek said Saturday night after winning his first U.S. men's title. "I was trying to learn from Evgeny Plushenko, learn from Stephane Lambiel." Plushenko, the 2006 Olympic champion from Russia, and Turin Games silver medalist Lambiel of Switzerland, have been the gold standard in men's figure skating the past few years, winning five of the past six world championships. Saturday night at the Spokane Arena, he dominated the men's event at nationals, scoring 248.88 total points to silver medalist Ryan Bradley's 219.21 and bronze medalist Johnny Weir's 213.20.

JUMBO DUAL TIMER DC100

Large electronic 1" digit display for easy reading. Moussa told the daily As Safir in remarks published Friday that he is likely to return to Beirut at the end of the Paris III donors' conference for Lebanon scheduled in Paris Jan. 25. The Arab League summit will be held in Riyadh on March 28 and 29 in a bid to heal divisions in the region. Moussa, in a statement issued in Cairo on Thursday, urged rival Lebanese political parties against "escalation" to give the donors' conference a chance to succeed. He called on government supporters and opponents "to put your political differences aside … so the (Paris III) conference could succeed in providing economic and monetary support needed for all factions in Lebanon." Riyadh had originally declined to hold the next annual Arab League summit following a 2006 meeting in Khartoum, resulting in an announcement the 2007 gathering of Arab heads of state would be held in Egypt's resort town of Sharm el-Sheikh.

Area championship just around corner for SCHS

The Shelby County Lady Wildcats used a 20-6 run in the first quarter to defeat the Sylacauga Aggies 69-42 Thursday night at Charles Dickinson Gymnasium, remaining undefeated in 5A Area 6 play at 5-0.Led by a 26-point performance by Wildcat center, Kayla Williams, the Lady Wildcats managed to hold off a surge by the Aggies late in the second half to claim the victory. The 26-year-old batsman was ruled out of the remainder of the series when he broke a rib after he was struck a fearful blow from a Glenn McGrath delivery in the opening match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Friday. England said the injury would take between three and five weeks to heal, and are sending the middle order maestro home to recover in time for the World Cup campaign in the Caribbean. "It's disappointing in a weird way, a sad way because the majority of the team liked watching him bat," Fleming told reporters on Saturday. "It would have been different playing against him and it's obviously a huge blow for the tournament and England." The round robin phase of the tournament is widely seen as a question of who will play Australia in the three-match finals next month, and Fleming insisted England were still in the running despite their eight-wicket defeat to the hosts on Friday.

Lehigh sinks Navy, moves to 2-0 in Patriot League

Kyle Neptune and Jose Olivero each scored 17 points and Lehigh earned its first road victory of the season, beating Navy 71-61 on Wednesday night in Annapolis, Md. He is also the first black South African to ever win his country's most prestigious surfing tournament. Just a few short years ago; the sport was for whites only in this once-racially divided nation. Kwezi would not have dared step into these waters. But he does step these days. Not bad for a poor kid from an even poorer neighborhood who showed up one morning six years ago at this surfing school eager to learn a sport he knew nothing about. "I didn't actually tell him that I didn't know how to swim so I went in not knowing how to swim and I got this leash on my leg and I was like oh no I'm only going knee-high I don't want to drown but it was a good experience and I got up with my first wave and he told me I was really good" , says Kwezi Qika, South Africa's Surfing Champion.

Girls’ tournament roundup

BETHANY -- The Arthur-Lovington varsity girls' basketball team began their holiday tournament play with a big win over a much younger opponent. But he made the most of his limited opportunities Saturday, and picked a fine time to score his first goal of the year. Huerta took a pass from Bryan Mejia, showed great composure inside the penalty area and pushed the ball just past goalie Byron Espana in the 88th minute to lead the Falcons past visiting El Camino 1-0 in the Southern California Regional Playoffs. That means Cerritos will play in the COA Men's Soccer Championships next weekend at Fresno Pacific University. "(Huerta) hasn't gotten a lot of minutes this year ... but today he came in at a crucial time and scored," said Cerritos coach Benny Artiaga. "I give credit to Huerta for his composure. For him to put that away, it was a good one." Steaua are in pole position, having picked up a fabulous 4-1 win in Kiev on the first matchday. It has all gone downhill in the three games since, but the Romanians can make up for their disappointment with a Uefa Cup berth. A draw in their backyard will seal it for them, irrespective of what happens on the final matchday, and give the fans something after to celebrate after two home defeats. Kiev, meanwhile, must beat Steaua, and then better their result on the final matchday in order to go through. However, with the final game being at home - and Steaua away - anything could happen if the Ukrainians can pull off a shock result in Bucharest.

How to get involved in tourneys Stren championship whets appetite ...

One of the most frequent questions I heard fans asking about during the recent FLW Stren Series Championship bass tournament on Wheeler Lake concerned participation. How do I get involved in a tournament series such as this? was the common query. For many anglers fishing in the tournament, instead of having someone ask for their autograph, they would be asked how they got started. The question also was directed my way and I promised to write something about it. Many of the fishermen, who are involved in a major bass fishing tournament circuit, have another job to fall back on should their fishing bomb out. And, if they find themselves successful, they have to work on keeping things that way. For virtually all of the accomplished professional bass tournament anglers, they are living out a dream.

UFC champion Hughes takes swipe at Canada over foreign policy

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (CP) - UFC welterweight champion Matt Hughes took a swipe north of the border Thursday, moving out of his mixed martial arts comfort zone to criticize Canada's foreign policy and Canadians' hearts. The fighting farmer from Hillsboro, Ill., who is preparing for a title defence Saturday night against Montreal's Georges St. Pierre at Arco Arena in the main event of UFC 65: Bad Intentions, was asked at a news conference Thursday about some of his past comments about Canada. Prior to the first Hughes-St. Pierre fight in October 2004, Hughes said "Who wants to lose to a Canadian in a street fight?" St. Pierre has alleged more slurs prior to this bout. Hughes was asked by a Canadian reporter Thursday if such comments were mere pre-fight hype and whether he wanted to clarify his attitude towards those north of the border.

Big wins for league leaders

League pacesetters Olympiakos and third-place AEK made second-half surges last night to thrash their respective opponents, Apollon Kalamaria and Larissa, with 5-0 scores. The League's Board of Control has referred the FAI Appeals Board's decision to arbitration. Bohs fielded an ineligible player in their 2-1 victory over leaders Shels in August and were deducted three points. The affair has major implication for Derry City's title challenge as they are three points behind Shelbourne. Last week, Derry indicated that they were considering legal action after the FAI's ruling. The FAI's decision was a major blow to City's title hopes as it effectively meant that the Candystripes' game in hand has been wiped out. The club's board of directors noted with "great dismay" the FAI decision.

Garrison Open Golf Championship: A brilliant victory for Mohammad ...

LAHORE: The final round of the three days 54 holes Garrison Open Golf Championship turned into a victory for Mohammad Akram of WAPDA at the par-72 Garrison Golf Course here on Sunday. Akram returned a card of 64, a course record, for a brilliant looking three rounds aggregate of 202, fourteen under par. This represents a significant and brilliant win for this professional golfer, early in the season whose talent had somehow got bogged down and for a long time he was consistently a member of the runners up gallery, barely getting any attention. His final card contained six birdies and one eagle. The other potential winners like Imdad Hussain, Mohammad Shabbir, Matloob Ahmad and Akhtar Ali encountered trouble here and there and dropped strokes that affected their chances and relegated them to positions other than the first.

Dress like a champion at work

Want to show your pride for the 2006 NBA Champion Miami Heat around the office, but protocol dictates you must be buttoned up in jacket and tie? The league has partnered with Colony Sportswear to create a menswear collection of jackets, ties and dress shirts under the moniker 52nd & 5th, named for the NBA store's Fifth Avenue location in Manhattan. The Heat versions include navy worsted wool ($348) or black leather ($648) blazers with the team's logo embroidered into the jackets' red mesh lining. Red and white striped silk ties ($39.50) subtly feature the Heat's fireball logo. Baseball's bobble heads are gonzo about the sport's potential "in a nation that has a population of more than 1.3 billion." The subhead for the first story linked to above says the "search for baseball's Yao Ming is on." (We've heard that before.) Back in 2004, an observer of Chinese baseball told us China was 10 to 15 years behind most other countries when it came to baseball. And this paragraph from the AP story would make it seem like that isn't going to change anytime soon: The International Olympic Committee last year voted to remove baseball and softball from the 2012 London Olympics, but both sports will be played at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://champions1.blogspot.com/2006/11/wild-pitch-major-league-baseball-to.html' title='Wild Pitch? Successfully defending the title next year might be even sweeter. Scott won the season-ending Tour Championship by three shots over Jim Furyk for his 10th career title and a $1.17 million winner's check. Next year, the winner of the Tour Championship likely will receive $10 million as the overall champion of the golf tour's new FedEx Cup series. The 26-year-old Australian held a three-shot lead over Vijay Singh at 7-under-par heading into the final round at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, then had five birdies and one bogey for a final-round 66. After three runner-up finishes this season, Scott said he was just happy to hold on for the win. ``It was annoying because in the past I would close really well,'' Scott said in a press conference.

Fatboy Slim - Champion Sound

As you might expect, the latest single from Fatboy Slim does exactly what it says on the tin. Which is a good thing, really, as earlier this year he had the temerity to stick it on his greatest hits album, several months before it was even due to be released. That sort of thing might count as a risk for a lesser being, but when you're Norman Cook you pretty much know you'll get away with it, as the chances are you're not going to wake up one morning and release a single that's complete pants. We all know it's going to be a brilliantly lovely dancefloor treat for all concerned and, of course, it is. Its sure-fire chance of success is enhanced even further by help from Sharon "Sweet Like Chocolate" Woolf, who adds some cheesily brilliant la-la la-la-la la-laaas to the suitably ace bassline.
